Fortunately for the seven-time 36-year-old world champion, the halo appeared to have saved him from a serious injury.

However, that meant Daniel Ricciardo took advantage of the extraordinary crash to secure McLaren's first victory since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix.

The crash happened after Hamilton moved to his left to defend his position on the right side, with the Mercedes driver just ahead for the left-hander who followed.

Verstappen ran out of room and ran down the curb which threw his Red Bull out of control and into Hamilton's Mercedes.

The rear of the Dutchman's airborne machine ran over the top of Hamilton's helmet, with the halo shield absorbing the impact.

Verstappen's Red Bull forward then ran aground in the gravel and rested on Hamilton's car.

An enraged Verstappen said: “This is what happens when you don't leave any room. "

The Dutchman jumped out of the cockpit and fled, without checking Hamilton's condition.

A lap later, Hamilton finally got out of his car, looking unharmed.

The pair returned to the paddock with the marshals now investigating the tie-up - their second in five races after the crash in the first round of the British Grand Prix in July.

Ricciardo started second, but took the lead after beating Verstappen in the 430-meter charge until the opening chicane.

Behind, Hamilton edged Norris and was within range of Verstappen as the Variante Del Roggia approached.

Verstappen held the inside line and Hamilton deviated from the track, crossing the sidewalks and falling behind Norris.

"He pushed me far," complained the 36-year-old Englishman on the radio.

After securing the eighth victory of his career, his first since 2018, Ricciardo said: “Can I swear? It was time.

“It was never a guarantee that we would lead the whole race, but I held on in the first stint and kept Max behind, then there was the safety car.

“To lead from start to finish, neither of us expected that. There was something in me on Friday and I knew there was something good coming this weekend.

Federal Reserve lent $300 billion in emergency funds to banks in the past week

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cash-short banks have borrowed about $300 billion from the Federal Reserve in the past week, the central bank announced Thursday. Nearly half the money — $143 billion — went to holding companies for two major banks that failed over the past week, Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, triggering widespread alarm in financial markets. The Fed did not identify the banks that received the other half of the funding or say how many of them did so. The holding companies for the two failed banks were set up by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which has taken over both banks. The money they borrowed was used to pay their uninsured depositors, with bonds owned by both banks posted as collateral. The FDIC has guaranteed the repayment of the loans, the Fed said. The figures provide a first glimpse of the scale of the Fed’s assistance to the financial sector after the two banks collapsed this past weekend. ...
