Tesla has confirmed rumors of the delayed launch of the Cybertruck electric pickup truck, revealing that the long-awaited pickup won't hit production lines until next year. Following a recent update, the Tesla Cybertruck order page now reads, "You will be able to complete your setup as production nears in 2022."
The delay is not really surprising, however, as the production of Cyberstuck is already late. When Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the Cybertruck in 2019, it was supposed to be on the assembly line in the second half of 2021. When Tesla's fourth quarter earnings call came in January of this year, Musk said “a few deliveries” of the Cybertruck will be coming towards the end of this year. However, he said he expected mass production to start only in 2022.
For the uninitiated, the Cybertruck is one of Tesla's most ambitious projects to date. During his unveiling, Musk revealed that the truck is built with a nearly impenetrable exterior exoskeleton, thanks to its skin of cold-rolled 30X ultra-hard stainless steel, Tesla 'armored' glass (which shattered during testing upon unveiling, triggering a glut of memes), autopilot functions and more.
The Cybertruck range will begin with a single-engine rear-wheel drive model offering a range of over 400 km on a single charge. There will be a dual-motor all-wheel drive version with a range of over 480 km, and the top of the line is a three-motor all-wheel drive model with a range of over 800 km. In terms of performance, the entry-level version displays a claimed 0-96 km / h in less than 6.5 seconds; the three-engine variant finishes the race in 2.9 seconds (claimed).
At the truck launch event, the entry-level Cybertruck was announced at an introductory price of € 39,900 before the incentives, with the two-engine AWD and three-engine AWD variants priced at 49,900. € and € 69,900, respectively. However, in a separate statement, Musk said the truck could "literally cost a million dollars a part" because the company can't build enough of its "4680" battery cells.
