So far, only a limited number of migrants in US immigration and customs detention centers have received the vaccine. Under the not yet fully fleshed out plan, the vaccines will be provided to both migrants who are deported and those allowed to remain in the United States pending a trial.
The migrants will receive the Janssen vaccine. Because of the single dose, this vaccine is better suited for a group of people with whom it is difficult to coordinate a second dose. Officials familiar with the plan say the upcoming border vaccination campaign could help curb the aggressive spread of the delta variant on both sides of the border.
In July, 210,000 migrants crossed the southern border into the United States, the highest number in a month in 21 years, according to preliminary estimates by US Customs.
