Capcom's Devil May Cry series turns 20 today (August 23), with the original launch of Devil May Cry on PlayStation 2 in 2001. During that time, the property has spawned five main entries (six if you count the divisions DmC: Devil May Cry) and the protagonist Dante has become one of the most iconic characters in the game. Happy birthday, demon hunter!
Both critically and commercially, Devil May Cry has had its ups and downs. The first game is widely regarded as a (slightly jank) classic, while its sequel is considered by most to be the worst game - by far. Fortunately, Devil May Cry 3 managed to take the series to a whole new level in 2005, and is still considered by many to be one of the greatest action games ever made.
Meanwhile, Devil May Cry 4 hasn't received quite the same level of praise on PS3, but it's still a rock solid game. And, of course, Devil May Cry 5 relaunched the franchise just a few years ago - a breathtakingly beautiful action title claiming some of the absolute best moments of the series. Needless to say, we can't wait to see what Capcom does next with the property.
