Samsung introduces first 5nm chip for wearables, to power upcoming Galaxy Watch 4 series

Samsung has introduced a new processor, named Exynos W920, for its future portable devices. According to its statement, Samsung's new chip is the first to be based on an advanced 5 nanometer (nm) Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) process node and incorporates an LTE modem.

The new Exynos W920 processor comes with dual Arm Cortex-A55 cores for high energy-efficient performance and an Arm Mali-G68 GPU for improved CPU and graphics performance. In terms of graphics, the performance of the new chip would be 20 times better than that of the previous processor for wearables.

It supports faster app launches, 3D graphical user interface and qHD display.

Commenting on the Exynos W920, Harry Cho, LSI System VP Marketing at Samsung Electronics, said, “Wearable devices like smartwatches are not just a cool gadget to have anymore. They are now an integral part of our lifestyles to keep you fit, safe and alert. With the Exynos W920, future portable devices will be able to run applications with visually appealing user interfaces and more responsive user experiences while keeping you connected on the go with fast LTE ”.

The System on Chip has the smallest package, which includes the Exynos W920, Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC), LPDDR4, and Integrated Multimedia Card (eMMC). It can hold large batteries while maintaining a sleek look.

It will also come with an improved always-on display feature that will activate a dedicated low-power display processor, the Cortex-M55, to reduce display power consumption.

The processor also supports a 4G LTE Cat.4 modem and an L1 global navigation satellite system (GNSS) to track distance, speed and altitude during outdoor activities. The chip will also be equipped with support for the new smartwatch operating system that will result from the collaboration of Samsung and Google.

The Samsung Exynos W920 will power the Galaxy Watch 4 series, which is expected to launch globally today at the Galaxy Unpacked event, which is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. IST.
